Mapping Change for Sustainable
Communities
Project
The
aim of the project is to produce a
community information hub about current and future development, a tool
to allow
different community groups to find out about other groups and to enable
them to
work together to shape and monitor the developments in their area. One
key
aspect of this is the use of a map as the focal point of the site.
The
Community Maps site is based on the existing London Green map, and
provides two
main interfaces for users to interact with – an overview map
of the East London
and the Thames Gateway and a series of community maps within this
region
providing users with access to detailed information about their local
area.
The
MCSC
project will train local people and communities to use these maps,
which will
help build long term skills and engagement.Use of SMS technology provides
information about local events, overcoming a
barrier of engagement due to lack of timely information.
The project will work with four local
communities to develop online local maps which are also linked to the
London
Green Map, to reflect their issues and priorities. Local people will
identify
the issues and will be trained in using the relevant technology and
mapping
skills. The project offers planning information and advice, and a web
based map
as a lasting resource for the community.
